Surf-fishing (gulf beach) at temps as low as 32° F.?

I need to know what gear to take along. What type of waders to buy? Neoprene? Breathable? Please point me in th the right direction, don’t know a thing about waders and related gear. We intend to walk into the surf to cast into the waves.

If your Surf fishing in the Gulf and the water temp is below 40-50 degrees you should try to find an Inlet or creek and fish THAT instead of beach fishing. Rivers and Streams that flow into the Gulf will generally be warmer than the ocean.

Plus, jetty’s around Inlet mouths give bait-fish natural , (and man-made), structure to hide in and around drawing larger Game-fish to the area….

Another good part about fishing around Inlets and Rivers is they are usually deeper than the average beach and don’t require you to wade into the surf………

Only a few times have I seen people using wading gear for surf fishing, (and that was in Maine and they were “Surf Casting” for Stripers in VERY cold conditions).

However, if your dead-set to get “wet” you will need these items-

1. Waders- You have 2 options for waders- Neoprene or Water-proof Breathable. Always purchase waders a bit bigger than your normal clothes. Why? Because you will need an insulating layer underneath the waders.

What to wear underneath? Breathable Fleece pants OR long-john bottoms with sweat-pants over and warm wool or a specialty sock.

If it rains you need a wet weather gear jacket OR a “wading jacket”.

You can wear what ever you want on your face, as long as it’s waterproof and breathable…..
