Questions re: cross-country skiing?
I’ve never done this before (not to mention downhill), but I’m thinking of taking up on it this winter with my nine year old son. I have a few questions that beg for your answers.
1. Is it absolutely necessary to take lessons for cross-country ski? Can I just put on the shoes and figure things out? Any videos to watch how to learn?
2. Let’s say I’m going to rent skis and poles (?) — basic gears. What else do I need to get? Do you need to wear a special pair of boots that fit the ski? Or do regular snow boots do the work?
1. You can DIY. I do suggest reading some books or watching some videos. Knowing what you are supposed t do makes it more fun, even if you can’t do it just yet. Lessons may be wanted later for more advanced stuff. I’m basically self-taught but have taken some clinics too.
2. You get XC boots when you rent. The rental people will get you all squared up with the right skis, poles, and boots. You will need to provide your own clothing. Dress in light layers as you will get warm quickly. Take water, snacks, 1st aid stuff, sunscreen, sunglasses, and extra gloves. Make sure your boots fit well before you leave the rental place. Expect a blister or two the first day.
Good Luck
