Truckee Area Skiing
Truckee is a city of about 16,000 residents in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in northeastern California near the Nevada border. With its scenic mountain setting and 5,800-foot elevation, Truckee is a great getaway from the San Francisco Bay Area, which is about a three hours drive to the west. In addition to abundant skiing options, Truckee is also home to beautiful Donner Lake and spectacular Lake Tahoe is less than a half hour’s drive south. Donner’s Pass, which is nine miles west of Truckee, is the closest skiing in proximity to the Bay Area.
Truckee is in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area that has numerous outstanding ski resorts. Nearby mountains that reach nearly 10,000 feet receive up five hundred inches of snowfall. Within a half hour’s drive of Truckee, there are more a half dozen ski areas for residents and visitors including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Tahoe Donner, Northstar At Tahoe, Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch and Boreal. The ski areas are typically open from late November through early April, depending on the conditions.
Squaw Valley is the area’s most famous ski resort. It was host to the 1960 Winter Olympics, which really put the Lake Tahoe area on the map for skiing. Squaw Valley is now the second largest ski area in the Lake Tahoe area and has a variety of resort activities for visitors of all ages. Squaw Valley has 2,700 vertical feet of skiing with over one hundred seventy runs. It has thirty-three lifts serving skiers and snowboarders with a wide variety of terrain, from beginners up to experts. For non-skiers and boarders, Squaw Valley offers snow tubing, climbing walls and a variety of shops and restaurants.
