Versatile skis= change from downhill to cross-country?
Does anyone make skis that can be changed from downhill to cross country; maybe by just changing the bindings and boots. I know the width of the skis are different but a middle sized width should work.
I know some people who use a wider backcountry nordic ski both for XC touring and downhill. Karhu makes the 10th Mountain and XCD Guide and Fischer has some similar skis in their S-Bound line of skis. These skis are wider than normal XC skis and have a metal edge for good turning, but also have the double-camber properties of an XC ski as well as a base with scales for easy gripping on the flat sections and the uphill parts. They aren’t going to be as fast as a regular downhill or telemark ski, but it’s a decent option if you want something that will allow you to go anywhere.
You can use the same boot and binding either going downhill or doing XC, you just have to learn how to do a telemark turn.
Using a regular downhill ski for XC is tough. You need to use Alpine Touring or Telemark bindings/boots and then use a climbing skin if you are going up long/steep terrain. If you are going up a big mountain only to ski it down, the skins aren’t a hassle, but you have to take them off and put them back on if you are doing a series of ups and down and it wastes time. Plus, most alpine skis are too heavy for extended XC use and they don’t have the springy characteristics that allow for good XC skiing.
You can’t just change the bindings and the boots. Bindings are normally screwed on to the skis and the screws are set in place with glue. If you don’t glue the screws, eventually you will strip out the core and have to re-drill all the holes.
